I’ve never seen anyone use the navigation lights because they don’t draw enough electric. Generally speaking, people will flip on the landing light and then turn it back off to check that the needle moves. Another way to do it is to turn the alternator portion of the master switch off and look for a discharge. You probably would never forget, but as a general practice, if you turn something off that should normally be on, it’s a good idea to keep your hand on the switch until you turn it back on again. It’s just a way to guard against the errors we humans make when distracted.
