Basic Med

My 3rd class medical has just expired as of June. I took the basic med. course on line and passed the quiz. Do I need to have my doctor do my exam now or do I get the 48 months from the time of my last medical.

    You need your doctor to do an exam. According the the Basic Med requirements you need 4 things to fly under Basic Med.

    1. Any valid U.S. Drivers License (Doesn’t have to comply with REAL ID act, for those that are wondering)
    2. Have held a valid Medical after July 14, 2006
    3. Get a physical exam from a state-licensed physician using the FAA checklist
    4. Complete the online BasicMed course.

    The only thing you are missing is item 3 (I’m assuming you have a drivers license).

    Your exam for your medical certificate wouldn’t qualify for BasicMed unless your doctor had also filled out the checklist for that. (Yes, you can have a medical certificate and choose to operate under BasicMed as well. Thee FAA FAQ has more details on that.)

    Since you said your medical is expired, I can assume that you got it before BasicMed existed so your having the checklist wouldn’t be possible since it didn’t exist at the time.
