Instrument Written Endorsement

Can I take an IFR written test without any endorsement? I am thinking of flying to Florida for the IFR training on G1000 equipped aircraft but if possible they recommend already having passed the knowledge test.

You will need an endorsement to take the IFR written test – but they are very easy to come by. Most any instructor would likely be happy to do it.

As an active instructor I would definitely not sign off a student for the instrument written if I did not think he was ready/able to pass the test. This reflects poorly on both the flight instructor and the students records. Taking this into account I wouldn’t expect just ANY flight instructor to be willing to give you the written endorsement.

61.65(b) A person who applies for an instrument rating must have recieved and logged ground training from an authorized instructor or accomplished a home-study course…

Unless that instructor has personally given you that ground training or you can show that you’ve completed a home-study course I would not expect him to give you the endorsement.

But on the up-side there are many home study courses out there, many of which will give you a printed endorsement upon completion. Check out ASA and Gleim’s options.

    Hope that helps
