2014 ATP Requirements 61.156

Regarding the new ATP requirements effective Aug 2014 per 61.156:

It's my understanding that If I knock out the ATP written NLT July 2014 I am exempt from the new standards required to take the written; however, I have  24 months to acquire the experience requirements required for the practical.

Will my practical involve the 2013 experience requirements or the new, more stringent 2014 requirements?

    I read the new regulation the same as you. Once you take and pass the ATP knowledge test for airplanes by July 2014 you no longer have to comply with the new ground school requirements to get the endorsement to take the knowledge test.

    You must complete the practical test with 24 calendar months of passing the knowledge test or you will have to attend the ground school and receive the endorsement for the test.

    My understanding is, if you take the ATP Practical after July 31, 2014, your experience requirements must meet the requirements set forth in the new regs (there is some flexibility if you want a restricted rating). If you take the written before that date, you are exempt from the ‘ground school’ requirements for 24 months. This is because, before Aug 2014, you do not need to present a graduation certificate from an approved training center to be eligible for the ATP written. After that date, you must present the certificate to take the written. The ‘grandfathered in’ only applies to the ground school requirements, not the experience requirements. On the date you take the practical, you must meet all flight and experience requirements for the exam you are taking (ie. the ATP).
