91.205 (d) (9) Gyroscopic direction indicator

In this section of the FAR it is stated that for IFR flight, a Gyroscopic direction indicator (directional gyro or equivalent) is required. What would the "equivalent" be? Could this be a digital representation of a heading indicator that is not gyroscopic such as on an iPad? This is assuming that all other requirements are met such as mag direction indicator compass and all equipment installed is operational.

    The equivalent would be an AHRS or IRS system. These systems are approved by the FAA when the plane was certified certified through a supplemental type certificate.

    The iPad is not FAA approved.

    The equipment must be installed in the aircraft, therefore an iPad is not an equivalent to a directional gyro. An HSI, EHSI, PFD would be equivalent to a directional gyro.

    Also remember that 91.205(d)(9) is not the beginning nor the end of what is required. As an example if you are flying a part 23 airplane pitot heat is required per 23.1323.
