Flight Following to a VOR?

Hello

I live and fly off of an unpublished grass strip that is 1/2 mile from a VOR. My question is: When returning home can I ask Flight Following that my destination be the VOR instead of the local airport which is 30 miles away? (This would save time and  $)

    There is no requirement that you be going to a published airport in order to receive flight following, in fact there is no requirement that you be going anywhere. I have asked for flight following in a practice area to help point out any nearby traffic while we were maneuvering.

    You can even file a flightplan, either a VFR or IFR one to or from your home strip. You can provide your home airport location with the flightplan as a VORrrrddd or a Latitude/Longitude. If you file IFR to your home field, you must file an alternate that has an approach your aircraft is capable of flying and that meets the alternate filing forecast.

    Following up on John’s answer, here’s what happened on a flight just yesterday:

    I was heading to a private airport in the mountains of North Carolina. When I asked for Flight Following (from Charlotte TRACON), I gave the identifier for the private field. Approach acme back and asked whether I could give them a public airport that was nearby (I’m guessing something about the restrictions on their data system). I did. Later I was switched to Atlanta Center.

    Atlanta Center was apparently given the public airport as my termination point. When I reached it, Atlanta asked me to report the public airport in sight. At that point, I simply told them I was heading for a private airport 17 miles away and asked them to stay with me until I reported it in sight. Atlanta was happy to do so.
