Can my boyfriend still be a pilot?

Asked by: 2850 views Student Pilot

We recently went on vacation to Canada and on the way back into the US, our vehicle was searched and they found my marijuana, papers and pipe in a safe designed to look like a can of root beer- even though I said it was mine, it was his vehicle and he was driving so he was given a citation for posession of a small amount and paraphernalia. He was accepted at a flight school, recently did his class 2 medical and it is in review as he had a DUI conviction 7 years ago. Is this going to effect his review or can he even be a pilot after a possession citation? Also, if they already reviewed his stuff and this citation isn't on his record yet, are they going to find out about it before the next medical exam? I heard you can't apply for your pilot's license until a year after the conviction, so can he still start school in the fall and be pretty much in the clear by the time he actually applies for the license, or does he have to wait a year to even start school? He's really bummed and we're not sure how to find all the answers we need.

There is a one year waiting period after the conviction of drugs / paraphernalia to apply for any certificate or rating.  Unfortunately, the student pilot certificate needed to solo is a certificate and he cannot apply for one till after that time frame.
After that, he can apply and just make sure to answer that question honestly every time he applies for a certificate or rating.
