Flight review question

Asked by: 1849 views , ,
Flight Instructor, Private Pilot

I am a brand new flight instructor and my medical is also current. I have ASEL/AMEL commercial pilot and just an initial CFI. One of my friends who only has PPL wants me to give him a flight review. We can go to a local FBO where we are both checked out and rent an airplane there then do a flight part of the flight review. The question is: Is it legal for me to give him a flight review? I am not hired as a flight instructor from any flight school yet, just have my CFI rating. Also, I am an international student with F1 VISA which might complicate this situation.

Thanks

It is completely okay for you to do a flight review for him.

The only caution I suggest is to ensure the two of you agree on who the PIC is to be (I suggest that it be your friend) and make absolutely certain that the FBO knows what you intend to do and who is the PIC. Everything is cool until something bad happens, the you would be amazed how quickly things go bad. I am talking about things like court cases where the case turns on just who was the PIC when the airplane got damaged or look at that fine print in the rental agreement that says only the school’s CFI’s are allowed to do flight reviews. Like everything legal, having it in writing is infinitely better than walking into court with nothing but your honest face and the truth.
