Required CFI documents?

Asked by: 725 views FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor

What documents must a CFI carry with him/her when providing training?  I thought I knew the answer but missed the question on my CFI exam this morning.  And I'm not able to find this info in the regs.  I thought the answer was CFI certificate and current medical.  Since that's not correct apparently, can someone direct me to the relevant information so I can learn what is the correct answer?

Read the back of your instructor certificate. You will see the wording “Not valid unless accompanied by pilot certificate xxxxxxx.”

You must have your pilot certificate with, also.

The reg you want is 61.3. Technically, 61.3(d) only requires you to have the CFI certificate unless you are also acting as PIC or required crewmember, in which case you also require the documents required of any person acting in a pilot capacity under 61.3(a)-(c).

As Kris points out, however, the CFI certificate has its own language always requiring possession of the associated pilot certificate.
