CFI Initial practical test endorsements – still confused

Hi everyone - hope this hasn't been worn into the ground too badly. I did a search on other questions, but still can't see an answer that I would be comfortable showing the examiner...
Now i know an endorsement is not required in order to TAKE the FOI and FI-A tests. I've taken those and passed *whew*.
But I can't get my head around the fact that in AC61.65G, appendix A, A.41 - it seems pretty clear that I need an endorsement to take the practical test. Or at least to have one in there to show the DPE. It is also there in 61.183(d).
So certainly, while I have no reason to disbelieve everyone who says it is not required, if asked I would like to be able to articulate "why" to the DPE with something equally compelling as the items above which seems to suggest I do.
Secondly - if it is decided that I need to have the endorsement... my CFI didn't give me the FOI/FI-A training so not sure he would even want to (I used the books).
Maybe a DPE can weigh in? Thanks!!
adam
