How to relate yourself when flying to unfamiliar airports.

Hi im having a trouble orienting myself to the runway when flying at unfamiliar airports.

Do you guys have some tips to help with this?

 

My instructor uses the DG but the way but I feel another way of looking at it can yield better results.

    I also use the DG or HSI like your instructor. You can also use an EFB such as ForeFlight to show extended center lines of runways at an airport or you can add a depiction of the pattern entry to your route. Other methods would include adding an approach to the expected runway on your GPS or using OBS mode set to the runway heading.
