How to choose a STAR when planning an IFR flight?

General IFR question: Most class B airports seem to have many published STARs, and from any given direction, two or more of them are often equally as convenient.

How do you choose among equally-convenient STARs when planning an IFR flight, perhaps 12 or more hours before the actual flight?

To what extent does the runway in use at the time of arrival determine which STAR to use?

    Do you have an example of the choice dilemma? And what are you flying?

    If have found most SIDs and STARs to be pretty obvious, especially when excluding the ones that say “turbojet only.” And, depending on the airport, even the “obvious” ones aren’t necessarily assigned.

    I have found a VERY easy way to deal with this, if you don’t mind using the fltplan.com online system. It is free, by the way. If you log on and put in an IFR flight plan for any destination, at the bottom it will provide LOTS of information about routes actually, filed, AND assigned by ATC. So very easy to see what kinds of routes are used. I use it all the time, and it almost never fails to help enormously.
